Take a journey to Pompeii and you’ll be following in the footsteps of many famous scholars and archaeologists, for this former Roman city is now one of the world’s most famous heritage sites.
Once a bustling port, this resort south east of Naples was destroyed without warning by Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Over two days, 5 metres of volcanic ash covered the resort, and many of its inhabitants. It was the earliest recorded eruption of the Volcano, and quickly became its most famous.
The first remains of Pompeii were discovered back in 1748, and long periods of excavation and restoration have taken place since then. The result is an interesting glimpse into what life would have been like when the Romans colonised the port. Roman baths, theatres, temples, and villas have been uncovered, along with many paintings and artefacts. They were first displayed privately for Bourbon King Charles 2nd, and are now on public display in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.
Understandably Pompeii is a popular visitor attraction, and there are now opportunities to have private guided tours around the ruined resort. They are led by English speaking experts with knowledge to impart, and stories to tell that will bring the history of Pompeii alive. For any sightseers on a trip to the Campania region of Southern Italy, this is one excursion not to be missed.
