Welcome to the Campania region of sunny southern Italy, and the charming town of Sorrento. Sorrento can be found in the Bay of Naples, which forms part of the Neapolitan Riviera. Take a holiday here, and it won’t be long before you’re immersing yourself in all this pretty town has to offer.
The mild climate and long summers attract visitors throughout the year and it’s especially popular with British tourists. They come here to enjoy the pretty parks and piazzas, the views of the bay and Mount Vesuvius, and use the many bathing platforms set in the cliffs.
But Sorrento isn’t all about scenery and sunshine; there are many other attractions this town has to offer. Along with a selection of excellent hotels and bars, Sorrento is famous for its cuisine, and there are many opportunities to sample the fine meat and fish dishes, or take part in Italian Cookery Schools, held in some hotels.
The surrounding areas are also rich in vineyards, olive groves, and lemon/orange groves too, so fruit and wine are popular here. Shoppers will also find other local specialities in the shops, such as Limoncello Sweets and Rosolio Liqueur, cheeses, art works and ceramics, and traditional Neapolitan figurines. There’s also a weekly street market for bargain hunters, and fashion shops to suit all budgets.
Like many other parts of Italy, Sorrento has strong cultural traditions, in evidence throughout the year through festivals and feasts. This includes Easter Processions and regular displays of Tarantella, a traditional dance. To further experience the fascinating history and culture of the town, there are numerous museums, including the well known Correale of Terranova to visit. Amongst the artefacts and information, you may find details of the ‘Grand Tour’ and all the famous writers who visited Sorrento as part of their education. There’s also the architecture of the many churches and monasteries to admire.
Sorrento is also a great location from which to explore the surrounding area, and the rest of the Riviera. Boat trips are available around the bay or to the nearby islands of Ischia, with its thermal springs, and the chic Capri. It’s also possible to book excursions to Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii, or the Amalfi Coast.
The summer season here runs from April to October, though with the mild climate, it’s possible to enjoy a holiday or short break here all year round. Flights arrive at Naples airport from many U.K airports. The flight time is around 2 hours 30 minutes, with resort transfers possible in less than 2 hours.
Sorrento is a town that can be whatever you want it to be. Whether you’re interested in sightseeing, sunbathing, or just enjoying peace, tranquillity, and nature, you can do it all on a holiday here.
